Website

Hey everyone,

As you can see (or can't see because this blog gets so little traffic), we desperately need an updated website for the cycling club. I will take on this task over the summer and see what I come up with, and then everyone can provide input.

Rutgers Classic photos

This morning when I picked up my mail, I was surprised to find a small box that had been sent to me from California. I took out my knife cut away the packaging tape to gain access to the cardboard flap that kept the box closed, and when I opened it I found three prints of Tim and myself in the circuit race of the '08 Rutgers classic. Also inside was a CD containing 5 digital photos. Here are the best of each of us:

Levi Leipheimer Emerges as Winner of the Tour of California/ LetLeviRide

Hey Everyone,
As the title suggests, Levi Leipheimer won the Tour of California (an 8-day stage race) for the second consecutive time yesterday. What is not as well known is that he and team Astana are in need of our help this year. The ASO decided to ban the team from participating in the French tours, including the Tour de France - the reason cited being the doping problems of last year's team Astana. However, the decision is completely baseless given that this year's team consists of all new riders under completely different management; They even spend the most money on anti-doping controls of any team in the ProTour. If you feel the ASO's decision is unjust and would like to do your part to give Levi and team Astana the chance to compete, then please sign the petition at http://www.letleviride.com. Thanks.

Cyclocross World Champs

Lars Bloom is the new World Champion! I was pulling for Sven Nys though, oh well. Jonathon Page (USA) kinda sucked (got 21 or something unlike his 2nd! last year), which is a shame. Timmy Johnson got 23rd and J-Powers (both Massachusetts natives, woot) was right behind him.
In the U23 race, Jamie Driscoll from UVM got #34.

My past week of training

So...here is what I have been doing to get ready for the racing season. I am posting this in the hope that it might be inspirational or give people training ideas. I encourage others to post their training too! from what I heard people are doing, I feel like I'm kinda slacking...
I am introducing some intensity into my training after doing aerobic base for the past month and a half. I would recommend that if you don't have much of an aerobic base to focus on building it for the next few weeks before doing to much intensity.
Past Week, in no particular order:
1:30 spin with CBRC... 8x3min at zone 3ish, 6x1:30min at zone 4, and 4x15sec super high cadence
2 days of weights (shoulda been 3) - strength building phase with focus on leg extension strength (squats)
2 days - 1:15 mt bike easy pace with dips into zones 3-4.
Sunset terrace 5x2ish min lactate threshold intervals
XC ski 3 hours with lots of climbing

I wimped out again and didn't go on the CBRC road ride this weekend. 3 hours in 3o degs. eww.

Liggettism of the Week

Alright guys,

From now on, every week we are going to feature a new "Liggettism" - in other words, a spontaneous perversion of the English language as uttered by Tour de France commentator Phil Liggett. Here is the inaugural quote:

"...and now these surgeons of cycling are navigating this rugged French countryside over 'roads made for animals..."

Road Racing Format, Costs, Info, and 2008 Schedule

So... racing is really fun! I hope everyone is psyched.... Here are some details about the logistics of the spring season.

2008 ECCC Schedule:

March 1-2 Rutgers
March 8-9 Philly
March 15-16 Columbia/Princeton
March 22-23 Pittsburg
March 29-30 Penn State
April 5-6 Army
April 12-13 Boston Beanpot
April 19-20 UVM
April 26-27 Easterns at Dartmouth

Out of all these I'm thinking we will do Rutgers, Philly or Columbia/Princeton, then all the races in April.
Race weekends start with Team Time Trials early Sat morning. We haven't done these in the past, but hopefully we can do them now since we have enough people. After the TTT, the road race starts. There are 4 catergories: A,B,C,D and D start first , usually around 9 or 10. The D road races are 25-40 miles. On Sunday there are criteriums for each catergory. The D race is 30 minutes and generally we can get out of there by noon.
Depending on where the race is and whether we do the TTT saturday morning, we will stay overnight Friday, and definitely stay overnight Saturday. I believe some people will only be doing the Saturday races so that is also an option.

Costs:
Hotels: Union gives us 4 x $85 bucks in hotels. We will prob do 6 race weekends. Both Rich and I live near Boston so that leaves us with 3 weekends to pay for hotels ourselves. If we do 2 nights @$85 and 8people, it would be about $20 bucks for each person for 3 weekends. We can also ally ourselves with Union, and they have their own budget, so we can split a room if we don't have too many people that weekend.
Gas:
We get 25 cents per mile plus half of travel costs. So it seems we will be able to pay not too much for gas. For example, if we drive 100 miles at 20mpg at $3.30 / gallon, we use $16.50 in gas. $8.25 will be paid for by the Union and the owner of the car gets $25. So.... whoever drives technically "makes" $19 but that can cover the other half of the gas cost. Confusing? Yes. Deal with it.
We also have $300 to rent some vans so that will be a big pimping weekend in the econolines.
Entry fees:
I don't remember if it's $7.50 per race or $10. The union pays for half. We have $750 in race fees. So....you won't pay more than $10 per weekend if you do 2 races.
